I started The Novena Site to create a compilation of novenas that are prayed to Saints for help in all aspects of one’s life as well to offer information on the many Saints that Catholics and other forms of Christianity hold dear.
I was born & baptized Catholic and went to a Catholic school for the first 8 years of my formal schooling, but I don’t consider myself Catholic now. I’m simply not a fan of any organized religion, but certainly don’t fault those that are. A person doesn’t need to be Catholic, or even a Christian for that matter, to pray a novena and ask for help and guidance. But I will say, that it’s beneficial to try and forge an understanding of the saint to which you are praying, via research and meditation. Through this process one can and often does forge a deep and intimate relationship with those saints to which they pray the most. While my formal confirmation saint is Saint Nicholas (the patron of children and animals) chosen when I was 13, through the years I have prayed primarily to St Jude ( the patron saint of things most despaired of) and the Mother Mary. My love of and for them is unsurpassed.
Most every saint is a patron saint – meaning a protector and advocate for a nation, a type of career, an activity engaged in, a city, of health & diseases, of animals, of family, and of people as a whole. In the Catholic tradition, there is a saintly advocate for literally every aspect of a person’s life.
A comprehensive list of the saints and their corresponding patronage is coming to The Novena Site soon, so keep a look out.
Peace and good~
