Emergency (or General) Novena To Mother Mary

While this novena is often touted as an energency novena, or express novena, I find the words so beautiful, I use it as a traditional novena to the Blessed Mother.

I say it in the traditional manner of 9 consecutive times a day with each recitation followed by 1 “Our Father”, 1 “Hail Mary” and 1 “Glory Be”, for 9 days.

As an emergency measure, one ususally says it 9 times in a row (with each recitation followed by 1 “Our Father”, 1 “Hail Mary” and 1 “Glory Be”)  in one sitting.  Mother Teresa is said to have used this novena herself on numerous occasions.

This Memorare was written by Saint Bernard of  Clairvaux, who was born in 1090 at Fontaines-les-Dijon, Burgundy France and died August 20, 1153 in Clairvaux.  He was canonized in 1170 by Pope Alexander III.

He had a deep love and respect for the Holy Mother and wrote the following Memorare to her, which is now said 9 times as a novena:

The Memorare ~

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to
your protection, implored your help, and sought
your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired
with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of
Virgins, my Mother! To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
